Dental implants cost: what changes the price and how to compare quotes

A hand on a ringing desk phone at a dental practice front desk

There is no single price for dental implants, because “an implant” can mean one tooth or a full arch, with or without extra steps. We do not list prices: they vary by office and by mouth, and only an exam gives you a real number. This page helps you understand a quote and compare two of them.

What changes the price

  • How many teeth are replaced, and whether it is one implant per tooth, an implant bridge, or a full arch on several implants (often called All-on-4).
  • Steps before the implant: extractions, bone grafting, a sinus lift, or gum treatment.
  • Scans and planning, such as a 3D (cone beam) scan and a surgical guide.
  • The restoration on top: crown, bridge or full-arch prosthesis, and what it is made of.
  • Sedation or anesthesia, and who places the implant (general dentist, periodontist, oral surgeon, prosthodontist).
  • Temporary teeth while you heal, and follow-up visits.

How to compare two quotes

  • Ask each office for an itemized estimate with every stage named.
  • Check whether both quotes include the same steps: extractions, grafts, scans, the abutment, the final crown.
  • Ask what is not included, and what a repair would cost later.
  • Ask whether the quote is per tooth, per arch, or for the whole plan.
  • A much lower quote can mean fewer steps are included, a different restoration, or a different plan. Ask why.

Ways people pay

Dental insurance may cover part of some stages; ask the office to check your plan before treatment. Many people use an HSA or FSA, and many offices offer payment plans or third-party financing. Read financing terms closely, especially promotional or deferred interest offers.

What the FDA says to ask about before you compare prices

A lower price is only a saving if the plan is the same. The FDA suggests asking your dental provider which brand and model of implant system will be used, and keeping that for your records, so another dentist can service it later. It also notes that healing of the implant body may take several months or longer, often with a temporary in place, so ask whether the temporary and the follow-up visits are in the price. Your overall health and smoking can change both the plan and the result, according to the FDA, so a quote given before an exam is only a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Why do dental implant quotes differ so much?

They often cover different things: the number of implants, extractions or bone grafts, scans, the temporary, and the crown, bridge or denture on top. Ask each office for an itemized written estimate.

What should I ask about the implant itself?

The FDA suggests asking which brand and model of implant system is used and keeping that information, which matters if another dentist has to work on it later.

How long does implant treatment take?

The FDA says healing of the implant body may take several months or longer, often with a temporary tooth in place. Extractions or grafts can add time.

Can I use an HSA or FSA for dental implants?

IRS Publication 502 includes treatment to alleviate dental disease, and lists dentures among the examples. Your plan decides what it covers, so check with the plan administrator.
