Hair transplant cost: what changes the price and how to compare quotes

The glass front entrance of a hair restoration practice

Hair transplant clinics price by graft, by session, or as a package. We do not list prices: the number of grafts you need is only known after an exam. This page helps you understand a quote and compare clinics.

What changes the price

  • The number of grafts, which depends on the area to cover and your donor hair.
  • The method: FUE (single groups of hairs) or FUT (a strip). They differ in time, scar and price.
  • Who does each step, the surgeon or technicians, and how experienced the team is.
  • Whether medicines, aftercare visits and a touch-up are included.
  • The clinic and the region.

How to compare two quotes

  • Ask for the total in writing, not just a price per graft.
  • Check that both quotes plan a similar number of grafts and the same method.
  • Ask who does the extraction and the placement on the day.
  • Ask what happens if fewer grafts are possible than planned: do you pay less?
  • Be careful with quotes that seem far lower than others, and ask what is different.

Ways people pay

Hair transplant is usually seen as cosmetic, so health insurance rarely pays. Many clinics offer payment plans or financing. Read financing terms closely, especially promotional or deferred interest offers.

What the ISHRS says to check behind the price

A low price can mean less of the work is done by a doctor. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says the evaluation, planning, hairline design and creating the sites for the grafts should be done by a properly trained and licensed physician (or, where state law allows, a physician assistant or nurse practitioner within their license), and warns about clinics that advertise a doctor but delegate the surgery to unlicensed staff. It also says donor hair, once removed, is gone for good, so a plan that uses more grafts now is not always a better deal.

Cosmetic procedures are generally not deductible medical expenses: IRS Publication 502 excludes cosmetic surgery directed at improving appearance that does not meaningfully promote the proper function of the body, so do not count on HSA or FSA funds without checking your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some hair transplant prices much lower?

Prices depend on the number of grafts, the method and who does each step. The ISHRS warns about clinics where unlicensed staff do the surgery. Ask who performs each part of the procedure.

Is more grafts always better value?

Not always. The ISHRS notes that donor hair, once removed, is gone forever, so a careful plan keeps enough for the future.

Can I use an HSA or FSA for a hair transplant?

Usually not. IRS Publication 502 generally excludes cosmetic surgery directed at improving appearance. Check with your plan administrator.

Is FUE or FUT cheaper?

It varies by clinic. The ISHRS explains that FUE removes individual hair groups and FUT removes a strip of skin, and each leaves a different kind of scar. Ask for the price of each method and why the clinic recommends one.
