Botox is one brand of neuromodulator, a prescription medicine injected to relax certain muscles. A consultation is where a licensed provider talks with you about what you want to change, checks whether injections fit you, and explains the plan.
What usually happens at the visit
- Questions about your health, medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any earlier injections.
- A look at the areas you want to treat while you move your face (frown, raise your eyebrows, smile).
- A talk about the plan: which areas, the product, how many units, and what to expect afterwards.
- A consent form. Some places treat on the same day, others book a separate visit.
Questions to ask the injector
- What is your license, and who supervises injections here?
- Which product do you use, and is it from the manufacturer or an authorized distributor?
- How many units do you suggest for me, and why?
- What side effects are possible for me, and who do I contact if something feels wrong?
- When should I see the full effect, and is a follow-up visit included?
- Do you price per unit or per area?
What changes the price
Places price per unit or per area. The total depends on the product, the number of units, how many areas, the provider, and the location. A low price per unit can still add up, so ask for the total for your plan before treatment.
Before you go
- Bring a list of medicines and supplements.
- Ask whether the consultation is free or credited toward treatment.
- You do not have to be treated on the day of the consultation.
Safety checks the CDC recommends
In 2024 the CDC investigated harmful reactions after botulinum toxin injections given with counterfeit or unapproved products, or by people not licensed or trained to give them. Its advice: ask your provider whether they are licensed and trained to give the injection, ask whether the product is approved by the FDA and comes from a reliable source, and if in doubt, do not get the injection.
The CDC lists symptoms that need care right away after an injection: blurry or double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and muscle weakness. If you have any of them, see a healthcare provider or go to the emergency room immediately. In an emergency call 911.
